My research focuses on the post-fledging behavior of songbirds breeding in the Southern Appalachian Mountains. This is a critical period for young birds as both energetic demand and predation risk is high. I am investigating how birds balance the conflicting demands of food and safety by experimentally elevating food levels with supplemental feeding trays and elevating perceived predation with speakers playing predator calls. I then track post-fledging birds to determine how the experimental manipulations influence their movements, behavior, and habitat use.
